New Treatment for Narcolepsy

By May 25, 2018 No Comments

I attended the Narcolepsy Conference in Portland Oregon in 2017. It was during this conference that I first became aware of the new treatment for narcolepsy that’s currently in development. My awareness came during a medication panel talk with several physicians. The medication is due to hit the market in December 2018, but all the double-blind placebo studies have been incredibly promising.

Before I dive into the information about the new treatment for narcolepsy let’s back up a second. Are you a PWN? Start here. Are you looking for non-medication based treatments? Head on over to my article on how to treat narcolepsy. It’s over 2,200 words long and breaks down non-pharmaceutical options for treatment.

Current Narcolepsy Treatments on the Market

We’re all fairly familiar with the top two medications that are used to treat narcolepsy. They would be Modafinil and Xyrem. But were you aware of the full lists of medications used to treat this sleeping disorder? I wrote a blog post about it, you can visit that through this link.

The new medication that’s currently in its trial phase is called Solriamfetol. Solriamfetol is a dopamine and norepinephrine inhibitor. Its main purpose is to treat EDS or Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. The physicians at the conference all spoke with such reverence of this “miracle drug”. Now, as I mentioned before, narcolepsy medications have not had the best effect on me. My current treatment for Narcolepsy is 100% hollistic….for now. If this drug is as effective as they say it is, without intense side effects, then I’m game. At the end of the day, it’s about using what’s available to you to live a higher quality of life.

But I digress. Soliriamfetol is currently in development by Jazz Pharmaceuticals. The medication has been tested at both the 150 mg and 300 mg levels. The estimated timeline? As of right now, the FDA has set a PDUFA date of December 20th, 2018 for narcolepsy patients.

Interested in trying this medication? Sign up below and you’ll be notified as soon as the drug hits the market. Obviously, it’s up to your physician to determine if this new narcolepsy treatment is right for you, but it can’t hurt to stay informed 🙂
